Separatist referendum petition successful: Elections Alberta

A separatist petition to add the referendum question “do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state” has been deemed successful by Elections Alberta.
The elections agency says the requirements for success have been met by the petition after they conducted verification processes.
The “total number of verified signatures after random statistical sampling method applied with a 95% confidence level (was) 222,597.”
That well exceeds the number of signatures required: 177,732 or 10% of the votes cast in the 2023 Provincial General Election.
However, the agency says “the statistically valid sample size for the verification portion of the process was 384.” To complete the verifications, 952 individuals whose names were on the petition were contacted by phone.
As well, Elections Alberta says none of the signatures came from the seeded names on a List of Electors from the Republican Party of Alberta.
In April, elections officials announced they were taking action concerning “the unauthorized use of the Republican Party of Alberta’s copy of the List of Electors by the Centurion Project Ltd.”
Next steps
However, the elections agency says the next steps in the citizen initiative process are on hold pending the outcome of an appeal.
The petition was quashed in May over provincial law and First Nations consultation issues.
First Nations are challenging the petition, saying it’s unconstitutional because they have not been duly consulted given the impacts separation would have on treaty rights.
