WestJet warning passengers more flight disruptions possible in days ahead

WestJet passengers are being warned to prepare for possible disruptions to their flights in the coming days following a brief but turbulent weekend job action.
Roughly 4,400 flight attendants walked off the job early Sunday for a one-day strike, and although the work stoppage was short-lived it lead to the cancellation of 900 flights during one of the busiest summer travel weekends.
However, business appeared to return to normal Tuesday morning for WestJet at Toronto Pearson International Airport, but the airline has issued a travel advisory.
“As we resume flying and repositioning our aircraft and crews, some flights may continue to be disrupted. If you’re traveling in the coming days, only head to the airport if your flight is confirmed,” the statement reads.
“While this is an important step forward, the impact of recent labour disruptions on our scheduled flights means that a full return to normal operations will take time.”
A pair of travellers CityNews spoke with Tuesday morning received a text message from the airline at 2 a.m.
They were notified their rescheduled flight would be taking off at 10 a.m., which they say left them scrambling to get to the airport.
“We just seem to have a run of bad luck whenever we travel with each other so this is just sticking with the theme honestly,” says one woman who’s travelling to Victoria, “But honestly I’m just thankful they’re not on strike and that everyone kind of has ease of mind now..”
Her travelling partner said there “wasn’t really” any communication from the airline, “we kind of just had to find it out through the news.”
One of the key sticking points in negotiations concerned compensation for flight attendants’ work before a plane departs and after it lands.
Details of the deal were not immediately available, but the union says it closes the pay gap between WestJet flight attendants and counterparts at Air Canada who secured partial ground pay following their strike last summer.
The airline says WestJet passengers should be on the lookout for any email or text notifications regarding changes to their flight over the coming days.
“Please check your flight status before departing for the airport and visit our travel advisories for the latest information and available options,” WestJet says in an online statement.
