Alberta seeks proposals for gambling addiction services as part of iGaming launch

EDMONTON — Alberta’s government is seeking proposals for new services and supports for gambling addiction as part of its regulated online gaming market.
The province says the new treatments it’s looking to fund will be on top of what’s available through Recovery Alberta and existing hotlines.
It says the services will be funded through the new revenue the government is bringing in from Alberta’s regulated iGaming system, officially launched last month.
As part of the new system, the province will take a one per cent cut of revenues from each private sports book or online casino company to fund what it calls “social responsibility initiatives,” like addiction services.
The Mental Health and Addiction Ministry says it’s looking for organizations that can provide enhanced supports to individuals and families struggling with problem gambling.
The government says it remains to be seen how many funding agreements will be signed.
