Woman fatally shot by police after mental-health call in SE Calgary

A woman is dead, and Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after an officer-involved shooting in a southeast Calgary neighbourhood early Wednesday.

Calgary police say a woman called 911 for a mental‑health concern around 1:20 a.m., prompting several units to respond to her home on Legacy Circle SE in the community of Legacy.

Around 2:30 a.m., the woman came out of the house holding a weapon. Police say the situation escalated, leading to one officer firing a non‑lethal round, and another officer firing their gun and striking the woman shortly afterward.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they had been to the residence multiple times over the past several months.

Speaking Wednesday afternoon, Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan said officers are increasingly encountering volatile situations.

“What occurred this morning is just one incident in a string of concerning events where officers have been confronted with violence, weapons, and rapidly escalating threats while responding to calls,” she said.

McLellan said police are dealing with situations involving firearms roughly eight times a day. She would not confirm what kind of weapon the woman had, citing the ongoing ASIRT investigation.

“This has become our new normal, and it has consequences for our officers and their families,” she said. “The members involved in today’s incident have my full support unconditionally.”

This is the fourth officer‑involved shooting in Calgary this year, according to McLellan.

Gas leak forces neighbours to evacuate

Some neighbours were forced to evacuate their homes after a nearby gas meter ruptured during the police confrontation with the woman.

The rupture caused a leak that forced temporary evacuations as officers went door‑to‑door evacuating residents until the Calgary Fire Department secured the area.

People were allowed back home shortly afterward. The cause of the rupture has not yet been determined.

Two officers were assessed by medical staff, and police say the medical concerns were related to gas inhalation after the rupture.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation of the shooting. ASIRT investigates any interaction involving police that results in serious injury or death.
