Fire crews were called to a vacant former school in northeast Calgary after an early morning fire spread from the basement into other parts of the building.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) was called to the former Tuxedo Park School site at the corner of 1 Street NE and 28 Avenue NE just after 6 a.m. Tuesday.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the boarded-up building. Crews discovered signs of a fire in the basement and began an interior attack while other firefighters used saws to remove boards covering the doors and windows.
Firefighters searched the building and confirmed there were no occupants inside. No injuries were reported.
CFD spokesperson Alex Kwan says the fire appears to have spread from the basement to the second floor. Two ladder trucks were deployed to access the roof and upper-floor windows.
The blaze remained contained to the original building.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
