Canadians are becoming less generous when it comes to charitable giving.
A new Fraser Institute study finds just over 22 per cent of Canadian tax filers donated to charity in the 2012 year, down from recent years.
Study co-author Charles Lammam says we don’t stack up well when compared with Americans either.
“Canadians, when it comes to donating to registered charities, tend to donate less than our American counterparts,” he said. “If we look at the number of tax filers donating, Canada falls greatly behind in terms of generosity.”
While there’s an average number of Albertans donating to charity, our province stands out when it comes to donation amounts.
“On average, each donation in Alberta is about $2200, which is much higher than any Canadian jurisdiction,” he said.
Albertans are fourth when it comes to charitable giving.
Manitobans have the highest percentage of generous people, followed by Saskatchewan and Ontario.
