Alberta to mull over stricter drunk driving legislation

Counselling services will be provided at a Grande Prairie high school after four teens were killed over the weekend.

The football players were on their way home from a party when their car was struck by a pick-up truck allegedly driven by a drunk driver.

Mounties have charged a 21-year-old man with impaired driving causing death.

It’s the second deadly crash involving young people on Alberta roads in less than a week.

Now, there’s talk of tough new rules that could be on the way to crack down on drinking and driving.

If the premier decides to go ahead, the rules would be similar to those in British Columbia, which sees drivers get their cars seized if they register a 0.05 blood alcohol level.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark says their stats have been cut in half and the results speak for themselves.

“I know there have been lots of complaints in our province that it hasn’t been perfect, but it’s pretty tough to argue with that,” says Clark.

Premier Alison Redford says she’ll ask the justice minister to look over the legislation.

The Liberals say they’re on board with the idea while the Wildrose says they’d rather Alberta focus on repeat offenders.
