Scotiabank has come out with the list of the top performing commodities of 2011, with sulphur coming out on top for the second year in a row.
Used in DAT fertilizer, sulphur is a by-product of oilsands operations, shipped out to Asian markets.
“Number two was premium grade hard coking coal from western Canada into Asia; number three was potash, which of course is used as a fertilizer, and for which there’s been quite strong demand in Brazil, southeast Asia and the United States,” said Patricia Mohr, vice-president, economics and commodity market specialist at Scotiabank.
Hogs and cattle came next on the list, as North American producers liquidated much of their herds, tightening supply and driving up the price.
Gold also made the list, while heavy and light crude rounded out the top 10.
