‘Gear Up’ offers basic winter necessities

More than two-thousand young people are getting a helping hand in Calgary, Thursday.
At the 12th annual ‘Gear Up for Winter‘ event, they will receive a backpack filled with seasonal supplies including clothing and personal hygiene items.
Social worker Nicole Mizzi told 660 NEWS a lot of the youth are homeless, or marginally housed. She added families are facing difficulties too.
“We’re working with a family and they have two young adolescents and the mother, and they need some shampoo because they won’t be able to make it through the week and so we said yeah, come on by,” she continued, “we’re getting more of those calls then we have before of not just kids who are street entrenched, but kids living at home who just need the base necessities.”
Youth under the age of 24 attending the event will also be offered services such as a flu shot or a haircut.
‘Gear Up for Winter’ runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, November 5th at the Grandstand on Stampede Park.
