A divorce expert says some people may be delaying the tough decisions about their relationships, because of money concerns.
Karen Stewart is the CEO of Fairway Divorce Solutions; she says many couples are hibernating right now, still reeling from the economic shock.
“We’re still seeing a lot of people making the decision to move through it, but they’re more hesitating, and certainly, I would say it’s down a bit for sure over what it would have been from last year,” she said.
Stewart says couples can put off divorce discussions for the short term, but that can eventually lead to even more emotional damage.
She says in one of their cases this week, the husband’s company looks to be headed for bankruptcy and the wife has lost her job.
The couple’s marriage was in trouble even before the financial problems, but they are now hesitant to talk about divorce.
In the meantime, they are trying to figure out a plan.
“Are we still going to stay in the same bed? Are we going to have different rooms in the same house? How are we going to make this work? How are we going to talk to the kids? How do we do this in a way that doesn’t commit us to the divorce, but starts us moving in a direction which is positive, so we can put our lives back together both emotionally and financially?,” Stewart said.
Stewart is concerned that the economy is forcing some people to stay in poisoned environments.
