This article is more than 5 years old.
It’s a first of its kind in Calgary, blending public transportation with books.
The Nicholls Family Library, located in the Westbrook C-Train Station, opened its doors Saturday, with dozens of people streaming in to catch a glimpse.
Ward Eight Councillor Evan Woolley says this is a very appropriate replacement to the former Shaganappi Library.
“There’s a remembrance and sadness to leaving this old library that has served that community for so many years. But you come into this new library, it’s obviously extremely exciting, and it represents the future of what our library system is going to be, and is already today.”
As for the future of libraries, the Nicholls Family Library offers more than just books, as it brings technology right to your fingertips and allows for gatherings.
“Libraries are gathering places, not just for reading books, while that remains obviously a core function but it’s about much much more than that. So you can come here, meet people, have community gatherings, a whole range of opportunities. I think that’s what the library is all about,” Woolley adds.
Even further, you’ll be able to spend time at the computer lab, and check out a Chromebook laptop for the day.
A cafe will also be opening up under the facility, so you can even grab some coffee before checking out the latest books.
The Nicholls family donated a million dollars to the Calgary Public Library, to allow for this library to be built.
