Suncor shuts down base plant operations

A major oilsands producer is taking precautions and shutting down its base plant.

In an update posted at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Suncor said it started a staged and orderly shut down.

After the mandatory evacuation expanded to include the Borealis, Millennium and Hudson lodges, it began moving workers to camps further north.

“To ensure that we have lodging available for people, we will not be flying personnel (inbound or outbound) for either Fort Hills or East Tank Farm construction, on Tuesday,” Suncor says in a statement.

Inbound flights scheduled for Tuesday, for MacKay River and Base Plant have been postponed by a day while departing flights will leave as scheduled.
