Alberta’s top Mountie has been named deputy commissioner of the RCMP.
Rod Knecht, currently deputy commissioner for the Northwest Region and commanding officer of Alberta, becomes senior deputy commissioner of the RCMP, based in Ottawa, on July 1.
He succeeds Senior Deputy Commissioner Bill Sweeney, who’s retiring after 35 years.
Commissioner William Elliott says Knecht’s broad experience in both federal and contract policing will help him and the national force as he assumes his new duties.
With Elliott the civilian head of the RCMP, the appointment makes Knecht the highest-ranking officer in the force.
Knecht began his career with the RCMP in 1977.
