‘I Love my Muslim Neighbour’ event to show support for Calgary’s Islamic community

They’ll be holding up signs of love, instead of hate.

A local woman is putting a call out to show solidarity for Calgary’s Muslim community Friday afternoon in the northeast.

Michelle Robinson organized the event in reaction to anti-Muslim rhetoric she saw happening across the country.

“It’s really simple. Bring a sign that says ‘I Love my Muslim Neighbour’,” she told 660 NEWS. “I want my Muslim friends and neighbours to know that there are people that support them and love them.”

Her idea has support from the Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre, and she’s given a heads up to the Calgary police, though she’s hoping there will be only positivity.

“We’re going to be (at the mosque) from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. because that is one of their higher times for prayer,” Robinson said.

Robinson is encouraged by how many people have accepted her invitation, but for those who can’t attend, there’s something else she’d like them to do.

“Make a sign and put it in their window, whether they are at work or at home, just like a block watch sign, it’s really good for your neighbours to know that they have a safe place,” she said.
