Spring flooding stretches into another day

OTTAWA — Flooding concerns are continuing for the region, and it could be Wednesday before the Ottawa River peaks.

More than 400 Canadian Forces personnel were deployed to Quebec, where more than 130 communities have been hit by flooding including areas in and around Gatineau.

The number of troops has since tripled to 1,200.

Soliders from CFB Valcartier arrived in Gatineau Saturday night and are out assisting people in affected areas.

In Gatineau, around 700 people have voluntarily evacuated their homes, along with 142 animals.

Nearly 400 houses were evacuated.

The Red Cross is assisting 530 people at two shelters which have been set up at Jean-René-Monette and Masson-Angers.

Mandatory evacuations are taking place in Pontiac. The municipality is also asking for volunteers to help sandbag. They can go to the town hall on highway 148.

The City of Ottawa has not declared a state of emergency, as city services are currently responding within their capacity, but emergency operations continue in some of the hardest hit areas including Constance Bay and Cumberland.

People can take refuge at two shelters in the city at the Royal Canadian Legion 616, 377 Allbirch Road and at the François Dupuis Recreation Centre, 2263 Portobello Boulevard

Anyone in Ottawa or Gatineau who is at risk of flooding is asked to contact 3-1-1 and 9-1-1 for emergencies.

A state of emergency continues for Clarence-Rockland. A shelter has been set up at the Clarence Creek Arena.

A flood warning continues in Renfrew County.

All pedestrian bridges are closed in Smiths Falls.

Around 183,000 sandbags have been distributed in Gatineau since May 1 and 2,000 volunteers helped out at the Campeau Arena Saturday to fill sandbags, while several others assisted at various locations across the city.

Anyone who wants to volunteer to fill sand bags is asked to go to the Campeau Arena in Gatineau between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. or visit the City of Ottawa website for filling locations.

In Clarence-Rockland, filling stations are set up at:

  • 700 Industrielle Street, at the Waste Water Treatment Plant
  • at the intersection of Voisine Road and County Road 17 (please park at River Rock Inn)
  • at the end of Woods Street near the river
  • on Pago Street

Home rental site Airbnb is waiving all service fees for anyone affected by flooding in the Ottawa-Gatineau and Montreal areas between May 4 and 19th.

Meanwhile, other parts of the country are also dealing with flooding.

In New Brunswick, forecasts there have been calling for 100 millimetres of rain over two days with even more expected in the days ahead.

The west coast is also dealing with flooding due to heavy rain and melting snow from the mountains.
