Sweltering weather brings health, fire risks

As the city experiences more dog days of summer, Calgarians are being urged to keep safety top of mind.

EMS Spokesperson Adam Loria told 660NEWS it’s important to stay hydrated with water, not just caffeine.

“If you see anybody, sort of not acting appropriately, acting a little different, confused — lethargic, they may be undergoing some sort of heat related emergency,” he said.

Young children and the elderly are most vulnerable to the heat.

If you’re working outdoors, try to seek somewhere to cool down periodically.

Calgarians should also watch where they drop cigarettes.

Fire Spokesperson Carol Henke said cigarette butts are the most common cause of an outdoor blaze.

“We are still seeing people putting cigarettes in planter pots, in flower beds, or throwing them out their vehicle window,” she said.

On a dry and windy day, such actions could start a grass fire, and very quickly threaten people’s homes.
