CALGARY – A man accused of killing a Calgary careworker in October has been found fit to stand trial.
A judge has ruled that Brandon Newman will stand trial for the stabbing death of Deborah Onwu.
Newman, who is 18, is charged with second-degree murder and was sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation following his arrest.

Newman’s lawyer has expressed concern that his client won’t be able to properly instruct his defence and has described him as “childlike.”
On Oct. 25, 2019 officers were called to a Wood’s Homes assisted-living residence in southwest Calgary, where Onwu was pronounced dead.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees has said another worker was at the home the night Onwu was killed but was on a different floor dealing with another client.
