Councillor’s bar tab from Quebec trip raising eyebrows

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Should Calgarians be putting up the bill for a $300 bar tab for a city councillor?

Eyebrows were raised after Ward 2 councilor Joe Magliocca racked up quite the bill while he was at a Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting in Quebec City.

He also spent nearly double the second-highest amount from other councillors on the trip.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says his colleagues–who do need to travel and attend special events and conferences on Calgary’s behalf–need to keep a close watch on this.

“I think there’s huge value in councilors attending. But I also believe that you have to be incredibly responsible with every penny of your expense allowance, with every penny you’re spending on behalf of taxpayers.”

In total, the trip cost $6,400.

“I spend every penny as if it belongs to my mom because it does,” Nenshi said. “I’m not sure that this one passes the sniff test.”

Magliocca told Postmedia he was working hard during the trip, advocating for Calgary and the oil and gas sector.
