CALGARY (CityNews) – An ice climber needed to be rescued by helicopter after reportedly falling in the Rocky Mountains on Friday afternoon.
The 28-year-old man appears to have been scaling a mountain at the south end of Abraham Lake – midway between Jasper and Banff National Parks – when he fell approximately 12 metres.
Rocky Mountain House RCMP say emergency personnel were dispatched when they received the climber’s SOS beacon around 2:30 p.m.
Emergency crews utilized a helicopter longline to rescue the man and transport him from the location where he had fallen.
RCMP say the climber suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the fall. He was moved to a Calgary hospital.
“Everyone who assisted in this rescue should be commended for their professional, swift and incredible work,” said RCMP in a release.
