Two people and cat safe after fire damages home in Citadel

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Two people and a cat escaped safely after a fire severely damaged their home Monday morning.

Calgary fire crews responded to the blaze on Citadel Close N.W. around 8:45 a.m.

The two people living in the home escaped safely but one re-entered the home to rescue their cat. That person was taken to hospital for smoke-related injuries.

“Just one breath of that toxic smoke can cause you significant harm,” said Battalion Chief Paul Frederick who stressed you should never re-enter a burning building.

“Certainly the heat of the flame, the toxic smoke, there’s dangers of collapse, there’s just a vast amount of things that can go wrong.”

The fire badly damaged the home while a nearby house suffered minor damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
