Active COVID infections in Alberta continue steady decline

Heading into the weekend, Alberta is reporting 1,051 new cases of COVID-19.

The new case numbers come after more than 14,000 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 7.5 per cent.

Over the last several days, case numbers have fluctuated from the mid 600s up to nearly 2,000.

While these case numbers seem to be ever-changing, the positivity rate for Alberta has seen a dip over the last few weeks.

In mid-September, around 10 per cent of tests were coming back positive each day. As of Friday afternoon, the highest positivity rate seen this week was 8.6 per cent, reported on Monday.

Active infections also continue to decline, as there are now 12,978 active cases in Alberta, a drop of 445 cases from Thursday.

This is the first time the province has dipped below 13,000 active cases since Sept. 2.

As for severe outcomes of COVID-19, the province is reporting 16 more people have died from the virus.

This is the lowest reported single-day death tally since last weekend.

As for hospitalizations, there are now 1,000 people in hospital, 229 of which are in the ICU.

Should the trend from the last few days be any sign, the province could dip below 1,000 hospitalizations when case numbers for the weekend are reported on Monday.

On the vaccination front, the province has now administered more than 6.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

Of those 12 and older in Alberta, 85.8 per cent have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 76.7 per cent are fully immunized.
