Environmental groups serve Premier Kenney with defamation lawsuit

Five environmental organizations say they are following through on a threat to sue Premier Jason Kenney and the provincial government for defamation.

The groups allege Kenney deliberately twisted the findings of a public inquiry into their funding and whether they were conspiring to landlock Alberta oil by spreading misinformation.

In October, Calgary forensic accountant Steve Allan filed the results of his inquiry and wrote he found no organized campaign of misinformation. Allan said the groups were merely exercising their free speech rights.

The groups allege that after the report was released, Kenney made public statements and social media posts that kept falsely accusing them.

A spokesperson for the premier’s office says he can’t comment on a matter before the courts.
