Calgary cab driver goes above and beyond for B.C. father, daughter

Imagine getting a call from your distraught child who is in another province and stuck in the cold, and relying on a generous Calgary cab driver to get her to safety.

That’s what happened to a B.C. father recently who called Checker Cabs to ask for a taxi to pick her up.

Driver Mobeen was dispatched, but when he arrived, the woman was nowhere in sight.

“When he got there she wasn’t there so he called the father and wanted to make sure that he found her so he drove around and around the property,” Layna Segall, media manager for the Checker Transportation group.

Segall says after Mobeen drove around for a bit he spotted the woman and called out her name.

“The woman kind of was surprised and she said ‘yes that’s me’ and he said ‘I’m here to get you’ and he loaded her up. She had a lot of luggage and he got her out of there.”

However, the woman still seemed quite upset, so Mobeen took her through a McDonald’s drive-thru and paid for her coffee before dropping her off.

Segall says Mobeen made sure to speak to the father on the phone to ensure he knew his daughter was safe.

She points out Mobeen took a risk when he agreed to pick the daughter up.

“This was called into dispatch and when he picked the young lady up she didn’t have money, it was the father who was going to be paying from B.C.,” said Segall.

She says when the father called back to pay, he asked Mobeen be given a nice tip for his efforts.

Segall says drivers are parents too and they do care about their riders.

“In bigger cities like this you’re always worried about where your child is so I can just imagine how thankful that father must have been to know his daughter was safe and sound.”

She says she is so proud of all Checker drivers because they are out there helping every single day, noting that they have not missed a day during the pandemic.

“We’re out there and we know that there’s people out [there] who are in crisis so the more we can help the better.”
