Woman dies after being trampled by horses at Ponoka Stampede

Mounties in Ponoka say a 30-year-old woman was trampled to death by horses at the Stampede grounds on Sunday.

Officers say they were called to the area just after 7 p.m. to assist EMS with an injured woman.

When they got there, police confirmed the woman was thrown off of her horse and then trampled by other horses when she was rehearsing for the Stampede.

Paramedics declared her dead at the scene.

Mounties say “the matter is now being investigated by Occupational Health and Safety,” and offered no further comment.

Occupational Health and Safety has given the Ponoka Stampede a verbal stop-work order regarding the ‘Wild Horse’ segment of the grandstand ceremonies, as they continue their investigation.

Officials have not released anymore details on the woman.

CityNews reached out to the Ponoka Stampede, but they declined to comment.

Ponoka Stampede began on Monday and runs until July 3.
