Calgary Flames star Tkachuk says goodbye, cherishes memories made in city

Flames star Matthew Tkachuk is bidding farewell, after he was traded to the Florida Panthers, saying his best memories he will “cherish forever.”

Tkachuk was traded with a conditional draft pick to the Florida Panthers for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt, and a first-round pick in the 2025 draft. The deal nets Tkachuk $76 million over eight years.

“I’m sitting here, very emotional about my time there in Calgary,” said Tkachuk, who spoke with Sportnet’s Ryan Leslie on Instagram Live.

“I’m sad and happy. Very mixed. I’m sad I’m leaving so many great people in the city and the organization.”

Flames fans deal with another trade to their beloved team

Flames fans have been hit hard this summer with the trading of two of their big stars. But for some, it’s a great experience to have had Tkachuk in their lives.

Tkachuk was drafted by the Flames GM Brad Trevling in 2016 in the first round as the number six pick. Trevling was the one that had to receive the call from Tkachuk.

“It was the hardest phone call I’ve ever had in this sport at any level,” said Tkachuk.

He played for six seasons and recorded 425 points during his time with the Flames, with a career high of 104 in the 2021-2022 season.

Tkachuk also made an impact in the off-season. He played in four off-seasons, the latest of which was when the Flames were eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round.
