On Feb. 25, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) started investigating a traffic stop that turned into a shooting.
Officers asked residents in Canmore to shelter in place on Feb. 24 around 11:15 p.m. after police say a driver open-fired at an officer.
According to RCMP, both the suspect and the officer shot at each other before the suspect drove away, then ran on foot into a wooded area.
Mounties say they found the suspect shortly after surrounding the area with the help of the Calgary Police Helicopter Service.
Desylva, was found with serious injuries, police say, and was taken to hospital by a Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) air ambulance.
No officers were hurt in the shooting.
Desylva was initially charged with discharging a firearm with intent, and aggravated assault of a Peace Officer.
