Calgary Roughnecks bench boss wins NLL coach of the year

After leading the Calgary Roughnecks to a franchise record of 13 wins during the regular season, Curt Malawsky has been honoured with the Les Bartley Award for National Lacrosse League (NLL) Coach of the Year.

“Curt is a dedicated and passionate coach with a drive to succeed and a very deserving winner of Coach of the Year,” Roughnecks general manager Mike Board explained. “He is very detailed-oriented in his planning, his commitment to the job and to the team’s success.

“On behalf of the Calgary Roughnecks, we congratulate Curt on this achievement.”

Malawsky has been behind the Riggers bench for the last decade.

Before his move to coaching, the 53-year-old spent the final two years of his playing career in Calgary, suiting up in 31 games and winning the NLL title in 2009.

This is the second time a Roughnecks coach has taken the award. Troy Cordingley won in 2009.

Calgary saw its 2022-23 season come to an end last weekend, falling to Colorado in the best-of-three NLL Western Conference final.
