A man is facing a second-degree murder charge in a downtown domestic assault that left his mother dead and sent another woman to hospital, Calgary police said Monday.
Investigators say around 4 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to an apartment complex in the Downtown West End, near 6 Avenue SW and 10 Street SW.
When they arrived, two women in their 60s were found hurt — one with minor injuries and the other in critical condition.
Both were taken to the hospital, where 60-year-old Sol Harder succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving, according to police. The other woman remains in stable condition in hospital.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.
As a result, Calgary police say 32-year-old John Patrick Bon Harder, who also knows the other victim, faces one count of attempted murder in addition to a second-degree murder charge.
He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
No additional information is available at this time, as the investigation is still in its early stages.
The identity of the victim was released by police due to the relationship to the suspect to “further garner information from the public relevant to the investigation.”
