Driver of car that dragged Calgary police officer to death identified

The driver who killed a Calgary police officer nearly three years ago can finally be named.
At the time of the incident, Al Azan Shah Muhammad was just 17 years old.
His identity was protected by a publication ban under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, until now.
The decision of Muhammad not to appeal the adult sentence he was recently awarded means his name can be released.
There were three people in the vehicle on Dec. 31, 2020, when it was pulled over at a check stop. The driver eventually fled the scene with Harnett still hanging on to the window of the SUV.
Harnett was dragged for about 400 metres at a fast speed, before being thrown into oncoming traffic.
The person in the backseat has never been named or charged, while the man in the passenger seat, Amir Abdulrahman, had outstanding warrants and was handed a five-year sentence for manslaughter back in January 2021.
He has since been granted day parole.
Muhammad was sentenced last month to 12 years in prison with credit for four years for time served
The judge justified the adult sentence by saying the driver was just 11 days away from his 18th birthday and was already living independently.
