Annual Zoolights back at Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo

By Silvia Naranjo

The 27th annual Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo Zoolights, one of the most popular holiday attractions in the city, returns, this time with one million lights.

In addition, the zoo says there are close to 250 light figures, and a new arctic aurora theme, bringing colours inspired by the aurora borealis.

The aurora lights will be in the “Polar Nights” section in Prehistoric Park, which allows guests to visit the first seasons in the life of a polar bear cub and its mother.

There are also colourful lights at the Dorothy Harvie Gardens, snow and ice at the Enmax Conservatory, and a “Boreal Forest Trek” through Exploration Asia on the east side of the zoo.

The Zoolights offer more than a colourful light experience: there’s an outdoor skating rink open from 5 to 9 p.m., free skate rentals available, axe throwing for ages 8 and up, a visit with Santa, a garden experience illuminated by colourful lights and flower figures and more.

Also, sensory-sensitive guests can access a sensory bag (free of charge) with supplies to help improve their Zoolights experience.

However, the zoo says to plan ahead as it takes about 90 minutes to fully experience all that Zoolights has to offer. In addition, it is recommended to dress warmly. Fire pits will be in place around the zoo and hot chocolate is available.

Starting Dec. 1, a special offer that allows guests to visit both the zoo and Zoolights in a single discounted ticket to celebrate the opening of Wild Canada will go on sale.

The Zoolights will open nightly from 5 to 9 p.m. until Jan 7, 2024.

On another note, the zoo announced Friday that the skating rink will be closed for Saturday and Sunday due to warm weather.

Those looking to buy tickets, including to skip the line, can look online at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo website.
