Accused serial rapist, kidnapper returns to Calgary court

By CityNews Staff

A Rocky View County man facing several charges including sexual assault, forcible confinement, and kidnapping will be back in a Calgary courtroom Thursday morning.

Richard Robert Mantha, of Rocky View County, will appear in front of a judge to determine what the next steps are after firing his legal team seven days into his trial.

The 60-year-old previously demanded a French-language trial — which is uncommon in Alberta — and another setback for the proceedings.

Mantha is facing 20 charges after seven women reported being violently attacked by him, and in some cases kidnapped, over the course of several years.
