Tributes pour in after death of former Flames winger Johnny Gaudreau and brother Matthew

There was an outpouring of heartbreak and grief from around the National Hockey League following the tragic deaths of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. Jillian Code reports.

Johnny Gaudreau, who played nine years with the Calgary Flames was killed, along with his brother Matthew, while biking in New Jersey Thursday night.

He is being remembered for his storied hockey career, as well as his dedication to philanthropy.

Gaudreau worked closely with many Calgary charities, including as an ambassador with KidSport Calgary.

Starting in the 2017-18 season, for every goal he scored with the Flames, $1,000 was donated to the organization.

Kevin Webster, the organization’s CEO, tells CityNews you could tell he was passionate about his off-ice philanthropic work.

“I think it was the interactions with the kids after he played a full game he’d come up and chat with them and interact at their level post game, and take photos, sign autographs, and really just be one with them,” he said. “He gave those kids their first experience meeting a professional athlete.”

More tributes to Gaudreau, a husband and father to two, and his brother, are overwhelming social media.

Here are just a few comments reminiscing on the pair and their love for hockey, their family, and community.
