NE Calgary townhomes erupt in flames, explosions, sending 6 to hospital

A fire and explosion at three townhouses in northeast Calgary have sent six people to hospital late Saturday, firefighters say.

Crews say they responded to a report about an explosion from residents near the scene at the 0-100 block of Las Americas Villas at around 11 p.m., noting a large amount of debris around the incident.

They say a significant amount of flames and smoke was coming from the two-storey townhouses, and the fourth being threatened by the nearby flames.

Fire crews battled the blaze at the homes and nearby ones exposed and threatened.

They determined no one was home in any of the affected homes, and noted residents from adjacent exposed homes evacuated on their own.

Of the six people taken to hospital, one is in life-threatening condition, one is in serious condition, and four are in stable condition. Fire crews add they rescued a cat.

Firefighters say the residents of the four townhomes will be displaced.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire and explosion.
