Police in northern Alberta say a 14-year-old boy was killed after the vehicle he was in collided with a broken-down truck on a highway west of Athabasca on Monday evening.

Athabasca RCMP say the teenager was the passenger of a pick-up truck going west on Highway 2 near Range Road 232 when it collided with the commercial truck around 6:30 p.m.

Police say the drivers of both vehicles were injured.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors, according to investigators, who are looking into the cause of the collision.

“Alberta RCMP give our sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased. This is a profound loss of life for the family, and the community as a whole,” Mounties wrote in a news release.

The collision happened about 145 kilometres north of Edmonton.
