‘Not welcome news’: Tesla supercharger station closes at CrossIron Mills

Electric Vehicle owners have one less place to go as a Tesla charging station at Crossiron Mills Mall, shuts down. Phoenix Phillips reports.

Charging electric vehicles in the Calgary-area just got a bit more difficult as Tesla pulls the plug on one of its charging locations at CrossIron Mills mall.

The CrossIron location charging location just north of Calgary was one of the first to open in Alberta over five years ago. It’s also the first one to close in Canada.

Andrew Batiuk, director of the Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta, says the reason for the shut down was because of a lease negotiating issue with the mall.

“The mall wanted profit sharing and that was something Tesla wasn’t willing to concede, and so they parted ways,” says Batiuk.

CityNews reached out to Tesla customer service about the location closure and are awaiting a response.

Tesla drivers that rely on the site can either buy an adapter to use other systems, or plug into a newly-contructed 12-station charging system 12 kilometres away near the Calgary airport.

One Tesla driver says the change is only a small inconvenience.

“Not a problem, usually I charge at home.”

Another driver says the closure isn’t ideal.

“I live in Airdrie and I frequent them often,” they said. “It’s not welcome news.”

“I don’t know if it’s permanent, the app says temporary. I just took a stop in there out of curiosity and it looks pretty permanent.”

Batiuk warns the same fate could fall on the Tesla supercharger stations in Red Deer and Canmore.

He says both stations have similar lease agreement to the CrossIron charging station, and those agreements are close to coming to an end.
