Two suspects accused of bear-spraying two Calgary Transit Peace officers in the city’s downtown have been arrested Sunday, police say.
It happened at around 6:45 a.m., when the Transit officers were reportedly dealing with two individuals on Macleod Trail and 6 Avenue SE near the City Hall/Bow Valley College Transit Station.
“What resulted was those two members being sprayed with bear spray and them fleeing,” Acting S. Sgt. Mike Kelm explains.
He says Calgary police officers found one suspect shortly, then found the second suspect at around 8:15 a.m. and arrested them.
Charges are pending, and an investigation is ongoing. There is no further threat to the public.
Transit lines downtown were briefly halted as police investigated.
Several incidents involving bear spray in 2024 led the city to change the weapons section of the Public Behaviour Bylaw in June 2025.
The updated bylaw now bans the open display of weapons and noxious substances unless it’s for a lawful purpose.
While Kelm couldn’t speak to whether it’s become a trend in the city, he says police have noticed more cases in the last several months.
