A 79-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault following a violent fight earlier this week in northwest Calgary that has now turned fatal.
The altercation happened on Tuesday, around 2:15 p.m. in the parking lot of a McDonald’s near Crowfoot Way and Nose Hill Drive NW.
Police responded to reports of a fight between two men in their 70s. Upon arrival, officers spoke to both individuals, who declined medical assistance and further police involvement.
After confirming the situation had de-escalated and one of the men had left the restaurant, police cleared the scene.
Less than two hours later, just before 4 p.m., emergency crews were called back to the same location for a 76-year-old man in medical distress. The victim was one of the men involved in the earlier incident
He was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition and died on Thursday.
Police say the victim and the suspect were known to each other.
Chiu Man Yuen, 79, was initially charged with one count of aggravated assault before the victim’s death. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
An autopsy was completed on Friday, and police say they are still waiting for toxicology and neuropathy results, and the manner of death currently remains undetermined.
Police say they continue to consult with the Crown on whether the charges may eventually be upgraded.
Investigators believe there were eyewitnesses to the incident and are urging anyone with information to contact police at 403-266-1234. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
