Fatal crash near Brooks leaves one dead, one hurt

A multi-vehicle crash at a rural intersection in Southern Alberta claimed the life of a young driver and sent another to hospital on Tuesday evening.

RCMP say the collision occurred around 5:07 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 873, about 30 kilometres south of Brooks, when a white van travelling westbound failed to stop at a stop sign.

Mounties say the van entered the intersection at high speed and struck the trailer of a northbound semi-truck. The impact forced the trailer into the southbound lane, where it was hit by an SUV.

The driver of the van, a 22-year-old man from Coaldale, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV’s driver, a 47-year-old woman from the Vauxhall area, had to be extricated from her vehicle by emergency crews. She was first taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Calgary in stable condition.

The semi-truck driver was not injured.

Traffic in the area was detoured for approximately five hours while crews investigated and cleaned up the crash-site.

RCMP say the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
