Former wireless employee defrauded company of $60K: Calgary police

By CityNews Staff

A 25-year-old man is facing charges after Calgary police say he defrauded his employer, a wireless company, of more than $60,000.

According to investigators, between August and October, MD Fardid Hasan Arnab, who was working as a sales associate at the southeast store, created fake customer accounts in order to get 26 cellphones.

The value of the devices was more than $60,000.

Police say the fraud was discovered during an internal audit and reported to police in early November.

“Cases like this highlight the importance of robust internal controls and oversight,” said District 8 General Investigations Unit Acting Staff Sgt. Darcy Williams. Timely reporting and effective safeguards prevented further losses and enabled us to act quickly to bring the accused to justice.”

Arnab has been charged with fraud $5,000, uttering a forged document, and forgery.

He is scheduled to appear in court in January.
