Construction on five new residential developments is set to get underway in Calgary’s East Village, which aims to meet the city’s growing housing demand.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and developer Bankside Properties ceremonially broke ground on the Library Square project, which is just east of the Central Library, with construction set to begin in February.

This would bring 162 rental homes in two six-storey buildings just east of the Central Library, with tenants expected to move in by 2027.

“This is the most development activity we’ve seen in East Village since the pandemic,” said CMLC CEO Kate Thompson at the ground-breaking.

“We are proud to partner with industry, many of whom are here today, to bring these much-needed homes and hotel rooms to the area.”

Four more development projects would bring in an additional 588 rental and condo units for over 700 total, and 132 hotel rooms.

Graham Gooch, the president of Ayrshire Group, one of the developers of the projects in East Village, says the neighbourhood attracts families of all stripes.

“I think if I look back at some of our older developments, we’ve had a lot of success with empty nesters that want the amenities that come with the East Village and not all the headaches that come with home ownership. And so that’s one barbell on the higher end of the age bracket,” he told CityNews.

“Then a lot of new families and working professionals [will] have access to downtown.”

Construction on $700 million in major capital projects and ongoing stewardship is also slated to begin this year.

The CMLC is working to advance three Transit-Oriented Communities, the Werklund Cenrew Transformation, and the Olympic Plaza Transformation projects, with construction also beginning in 2026.

Additionally, the construction of The Culture + Entertainment District — infrastructure around Scotia Place — will begin in 2026 on 14 Avenue, 5A Street and Flores LaDue Parade.
