Crash involving school bus leaves man in 70s in life-threatening condition

Calgary police say Wednesday afternoon’s collision between a school bus and Toyota Corolla has left an elderly man in life-threatening condition.

A man in his 70s is fighting for his life after a crash between a car and a school bus Wednesday afternoon in south Calgary.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Macleod Trail S and 99 Avenue around 3:40 p.m. for reports of a two-vehicle collision.

Police say a 2008 Toyota Corolla was turning left from northbound Macleod Trail when it crossed into the path of a southbound school bus carrying roughly 20 students.

The bus struck the Corolla on the passenger side before crashing into a traffic signal pole. The impact pushed the pole into the bus cab, trapping the driver.

Images from the scene showed the front end of the bus heavily crumpled and the Corolla severely damaged in the middle of the intersection.

According to the Calgary Fire Department, both drivers were trapped in their vehicles. Fire crews evacuated students through the rear of the bus while other teams worked to free the two drivers.

The Corolla driver, a man in his 70s, was transported to hospital with life‑threatening injuries. The bus driver, a man in his 80s, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries but has since stabilized.

Students on board, aged 14 to 16, were assessed at the scene. One student was treated for minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported.

Police say speed and impairment are not believed to be factors. The investigation is ongoing.
