A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a two-vehicle crash sent a car over an overpass barrier in northwest Calgary on Monday morning.
Calgary police say the crash happened around 6:40 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Crowchild Trail near University Drive NW.
Investigators say a white 2024 Toyota Corolla, driven by a man in his 30s with a woman in her 40s seated in the back, struck the rear of a 2010 Toyota Yaris driven by a woman also in her 40s.
After the two cars collided, the Corolla went through a traffic barrier, sending it off the roadway and down onto the northbound lanes below.
The Corolla’s passenger suffered life‑threatening and life-altering injuries and was taken to hospital. The driver was also transported with serious injuries.
The Yaris driver was not hurt.
The collision shut down Crowchild Trail between 5 Avenue NW and 16 Avenue NW for several hours. Northbound lanes reopened around 2 p.m.
Police say there is no indication alcohol or drugs played a role. They are examining whether speed contributed, especially given the freezing drizzle warning in effect at the time, which left roads slick and hazardous for the morning commute.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Calgary police at 403‑266‑1234 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
