Pause for pets: Tripod pup Navin seeks new Calgary home

In this week’s Pause for Pets, 3-year-old Navin, a rottweiler who recently limped into The City of Calgary’s animal shelter, seeks new friends in his pursuit of a home.

After an assessment, a vet determined the young dog’s leg needed to be amputated.

But as Kristina Ince, animal behaviour coordinator and a Navin fan, explains, the brave and resilient tripod is healing up and looking for a new home.

“He’s still learning to navigate the three legs but is doing quite well,” she says. “We are able to send him out with volunteers on short walks while he is building those muscles, and over time, we feel like he will be active and ready to go, just like any other dog.”

The 30-kg rottweiler mix is a sun worshipper and can often be found lounging in a sunbeam. That’s when he’s not sniffing, inspecting toys and boosting morale.

Navin is also a pro at making friends, literally using them as a crutch.

“When he sees new people, he wants to go up and engage. He leans in for pets and throws his head back and is quite eager for attention and snuggles,” Ince says. “And when his front leg gets tired, he will lean in and softly kind of place it up on you. He definitely uses you and knows how to work the room, for sure.”

Ince anticipates that as the three-year-old canine heals, he will eventually be happy and mobile — like his counterparts who aren’t missing a limb.

“It’s almost like owning a regular dog with four legs. Stairs could be harder, especially as he ages into seniorhood,” she explains. “Right now, he doesn’t know any different and probably thinks he is a regular dog with four legs.”

Call 311 if you want to know more about Navin and may be the person who takes him home.
