Police say the death of a person found at the scene of a basement fire in northeast Calgary has been deemed to be suspicious.
Emergency crews were called just before 12:20 p.m. on Thursday to a home on 27 Avenue NE in the community of Tuxedo Park.
Firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming from the back of the house and located a basement fire. Crews stretched a hose line to the back and went inside to knock down the flames.
During a search of the home, firefighters found one person in the basement. Crews attempted lifesaving measures, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Alex Kwan said the fire was contained to the home where it started and no damage reported beyond the property. He could not confirm whether the residence had working smoke alarms.
Police say the death was ruled suspicious around 4 p.m. and the Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.
Several streets in the area remain closed as investigators work to determine what happened. Police say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
