Government experts predict normal spring run-off from mountains

It looks like we’re in for an average spring run-off from the mountains, according to Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

Andrew Huang of the government agency tells the Calgary Herald, that as it stands right now, this year’s snowpack is normal and he doesn’t forsee any flooding problems.  But that prediction could change if we get heavy spring rains.

Meantime at stations keeping tabs on the snowpack for the Bow Valley, measurements are slightly above normal.  According to John Pomeroy, the Canada Research Chair for water resources and climate change at the University of Saskatchewan, that means we can rule out drought downstream, but not necessarily flooding.

The forecast for spring run-off is better on the east side of the mountains.  On the B.C. side of the Rockies, researchers say they are dealing with below average snowpack.
