City police plan to introduce four more red light cameras to intersections around Calgary. That’s after doubling the number of speed on green cameras it has operating in the past year, to 11 intersections.
Possible locations for the new red light cameras include Highway 1 at Canada Olympic Drive; Glenmore at 52nd Street Southeast; Northmount Drive at 14th Street Northwest; and a second camera at 16th Avenue and 68th Street Northeast.
Revenues from red light cameras dropped to $2.4 million last year, but it’s been as high as $3.9 million in previous years. Police estimate revenue from ‘speed on green’ cameras at about $1-million last year.
Police tell the Calgary Herald the cameras reduce right-angle collisions at intersections by 48 per cent and rear-enders by nearly 40 per cent.
Scott Hennig with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation believes the cameras are a cash cow. He says several factors in the U.S. have led to a reduction in collisions, including larger lights and ‘all clears,’ where all lights go red for a moment.
