It’s been slower than normal at provincial parks in Kananaskis this weekend.
Only about 70 per cent of campsites in K-Country are occupied, down from other years.
Dave Hanna a spokesman for the Kananaskis area tells 660News the cool, wet weather has also kept many partiers at home.
He says they’ve only had a few rowdy incidents and things have been going well at Ghost Reservoir Provincial Recreation Area where the province issued an alcohol ban for the first time this year.
He adds Saturday night was very cool for campers with some seeing snow at higher elevations.
It appears the alcohol ban is also working in Banff National Park. For the first time, it’s banning booze on all long weekends during the summer.
Constable Howard Cann with Banff RCMP says there haven’t been any major problems in the campgrounds.
However, the liquor ban may be sending more campers into the town of Banff. Police arrested 10 people there Saturday night for public intoxication.
Campgrounds northwest of Calgary also reported a quiet weekend.
One supervisor at Jarvis Bay and Aspen Beach Provincial Parks says the no alcohol rule has been beneficial this holiday and hasn’t dampened campers’ spirits.
Whether it’s the cooler weather this May long weekend, or people being more careful outdoors, STARS air ambulance was not as busy compared to other years.
Cameron Heke tells 660News, STARS has only had to fly six missions this weekend.
Last May long weekend, the air ambulance flew approximately 25 missions.
Two of the calls this weekend were medical emergencies and the other four were trauma-related calls due to collisions.
Last year, STARS responded to 45 emergency requests.
