Officer charged after violent arrest: Calgary police

A Calgary police officer has been charged with assault after an internal investigation into an arrest.

Calgary police say they responded to a service call on May 22 where one officer allegedly used “excessive force” by punching a person several times after they had already been arrested.

After reviewing the case with the Edmonton Crown Prosecutor’s Office, a charge was recommended.

Const. Imran Khan, who has been with the service for six years, is now charged with one count of assault. He is suspended with pay while his employment status is reviewed.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in August.

Police say they are releasing this information in the interest of public transparency.
