Higgins officially 12th mayoral candidate

It’s now official, Barb Higgins is running for mayor of Calgary.

The former broadcaster announced her candidacy Wednesday morning to a crowd of reporters at a news conference downtown.

Higgins stepped down last week after 21 years at the anchor desk for CTV.

She’s the first woman to join the race for mayor in this election and the twelfth candidate overall.

She says she loves this city and couldn’t stay neutral as a journalist anymore.

“I know this city very well, and I want to have a say in shaping its future,” says Higgins.

While she doesn’t have any policies at the moment, Higgins says she’s a fiscal conservative and her first priority as mayor would be to tackle the $60-million budget shortfall.

She decided to jump into the race because of her political interests and beliefs, and the way the current city council has been performing.

Higgins downplayed comparisons to Ralph Klein, saying that was a different time and she’s a different candidate.

Higgins plans to release her full platform before Labour Day.
