City services may suffer major cuts

It looks like it’s time for the candidates in the municipal election to take out their calculators.

Some new information on next year’s budget is coming out and it doesn’t look good.

Just to keep property taxes at an increase of 6.7 per cent, Calgarians may have to cope with major cuts to city services.

This is all in an effort to try and deal with a $60-million budget shortfall.

“How much and where, I don’t know yet,” Alderman God Lowe says.  “Administration will bring forward a proposed budget.  They’ve been directed to do so and they will do so.  The new council and new mayor will take a look at it and have to make some decisions.”

He tells 660News areas like the zoo or city libraries will have their funding on the chopping block and many jobs may be lost at city hall.

The big issue is that revenue for the city has plateaued and there is little room to move.  So the only other option is to slash away.

Lowe says he hopes this becomes a big election issue and he wants to hear what plans the mayoral candidates have for the budget shortfall.
